New research from the University of Westminster shows that the way a man sits can create an instant connection between him and his date.

When a group of female undergrads were examined while watching videos of men sitting down and having a conversation with women, it was found that the man with the more dominate posture was favored by the survey participants 9 times out of 10.

In the two videos, the man had two different stances: In the first, the man sat very closed with both his arms and legs crossed, offering no hand gestures during the conversation, and the second sat with an open posture with his arms resting on the back of his chair, and remained very animated throughout the video.

Why were so many more woman attracted to the second video? According to Gorkan Ahmetogly, the study’s original author who has since left Westminster and is now teaching at the University of London, it’s all about history.

In nearly all historical accounts, dominant men have more access to resources. Whether that means food and shelter or money, women are instinctively attracted to men with dominate behaviors and body language because they subconsciously feel they will be better taken care of.
