When you have a little alone time to do some research on new positions and things to try in bed (read: when no one’s home and you can watch porn), chances are you’re going to click on the first video that interests you and mindlessly watch it without actually absorbing any of the information that’s being offered to you. Chances are you’re viewing quite a few positions you haven’t tried before, and you’re too distracted by the intercourse to actually use the videos as a learning experience.
Finding new positions and mood setting atmospheres isn’t the easiest task. On one hand, using Google or a basic online search engine is likely to come up with unfortunately dull answers, but watching porn to get ideas tends to be a little too distracting. So what’s the good medium between the two? Television!
Dr. Kendra Perkins, one of Cosmopolitan Magazine’s most trusted sexual health experts, says that watching TV is one of the most effective ways to subconsciously improve your sex life.
“When you watch sex scenes on TV, your brain isn’t as sexually stimulated as it would be while watching porn,” says Dr. Perkins. “Because your oxytocin levels aren’t exaggerated, you’re able to view the scenes as both a pleasure and a lesson.”
According to Perkins, the brain has an easier time remembering specific positions and other arousers (new places to kiss, different ways to touch, etc).
Since our Sexperts are always looking for new ways to help you enhance your sex life, we’ve gone through the best of the best raunchy shows to bring you the top 5 programs that will help you get off while helping you get better in bed.
So which shows made the cut?
5. Nip/ Tuck
Nip/Tuck has been off the air for a few years now, but the lessons we’ve learned from that show are still being put to use nearly every night. N/T is great for gathering ideas for spur-of-the-moment sex. Most people who meet online for the purpose of having sex still go through that awkward initial conversation because neither party knows how to initiate the act. Luckily for you, that’s Nip/Tuck’s speciality! Whether the characters are getting down and dirty in a doctors office, or they’re going from a drink in a bar straight to the bedroom, the Nip/Tuck crew seems to jump into bed without so much as a word.
4. Skins
Skins (the original UK version, not the toned-down US version) is a how-to guide for current sex trends. The characters, who are all in their late-teens/early-twenties, are old enough to have sex, but young enough to know all the best positions. The program has some amazingly explicit scenes that showcase positions and places you would have never thought of on your own. From doing it behind the bar that isn’t being used in a restaurant to doing it ‘vibrant’ style, Skins is a constant learning experience for new ideas to try in (or out of!) bed.
3. Californication
Hank Moody is a god amongst men in the art of seduction. Whether it’s someone he’s known for months or someone he’s known for minutes, once he wants someone in bed with them, they’re in bed with him. Many men and women have difficulty approaching strangers they find sexually attractive, but the subtle tips you can pick up from Californication are extraordinary. “Humans have an extraordinary ability to learn simply by observing,” says Dr. Perkins. “Californication is a great way to learn through a third party. What is he saying when he approaches women? What is his body language like? What were the interactions they had between meeting and having sex? Dissecting the information you see on television can help you become more skilled at picking up strangers and interacting with new people in general.”
2. Weeds
Who says a mother can’t have a little fun? Weeds is the perfect example of balancing work, children, every day life, and a smoking hot sex life. Weeds is a great show to watch if you want tips on new places to have sex while not getting caught. From doing it in a movie theater to a ferris wheel cart, new locations can be just as sexually satisfying as new positions can be! Watching the show won’t just get you while watching the steamy scenes, but it will give you great insight to how you can better enjoy your bedroom life outside of the bedroom.
1. True Blood
True Blood is the leading television show in demonstrating how to use the heat of the moment to ignite passion in the bedroom. In season one, Sookie, the main character, thought her boyfriend Bill was dead, but while walking through the cemetery she found him alive (well, as alive as a vampire can be), and instead of asking questions, she used her full-body excitement to boost her libido and screwed him right there amongst the tombstones. Forgetting about your problems when you’re having sex is crucial to helping you achieve orgasm, and these characters do it with ease.
Wanting to expand your knowledge and experiences in bed is a great desire, but it’s not always something that can be easily learned through porn. Finding a television show which you can relate to the characters in will let you enjoy the sex scenes, but won’t distract you to the point of not being able to learn.
So grab your DVD box set and your notepad, because class is in session. Let the show marathon (and the new ideas) begin!
