Swing, Swing: Why More People Than Ever Are Joining The Swinger Lifestyle

When most people think of swingers, they think of a time where bell bottoms and Sonny and Cher dominated, but what most people aren’t aware of is that the swinger lifestyle is more popular now than ever.

In the last decade alone, an increase of 20% was seen in women who had cheated on their husbands, but even more staggering was the amount of men seeking sexual pleasure outside of their marriage: 45% more men have had extramarital affairs than ones who did 10 years ago.

With so many people cheating on their partners it’s easy to assume that swingers would be on the top of that list, but according to ABC, it’s actually the opposite. Couples who are open to swinging are nearly 90% less likely to have sex outside of their relationship without permission from their partner first.

So what do swingers know about good relationships that others don’t?

In a survey that polled swingers about the quality of their relationship, ABC found that couples who were open to inviting others in bed with them have better communication, more trust, and a higher level of intimacy than others.

Dr. Blake McGrath, a couples therapist in Austin, Texas, says that when couples explore their sexual options outside of their marriage with full permission of their partner, it builds honesty between the two.

“When you have a man and a women who are in love but who are unable to sexually satisfy each other, it’s likely that one party or both will stray to find that satisfaction somewhere else,” says Dr. McGrath. “That one component of dishonesty has the ability to ruin the relationship. But when couples are secure enough with their emotional bond that they can agree to allow each other to have a purely sexual relationship with someone else, it gives them to have the best of both worlds and keeps both parties happy.”

If you’re going to join the swinger lifestyle, make sure you have the check list covered!

  • Are you both sure you want to do this?
The idea of seeing your partner engage in intercourse with another person may be exciting, but actually seeing them perform the act is often too much for some people to handle. If you’re interested in becoming a swinger, make sure that you’re suggesting it to your partner, not convincing them to do it.
  • Are you going to full-swing or soft-swing?
May times when couples agree to become swingers, they don’t fully discuss what they’re trying to accomplish. Soft-swingers are couples who do everything but intercourse, but even full-swingers have their limits– Many people think that sex is acceptable, but the act of kissing is too intimate. Set the rules ahead of time so there are no unpleasant surprises when you find new partners.
  • Know what you want!
Do you want to bring another male into bed with you? A female? A couple? Sitting down and discussing what you’re looking for makes the experience more enjoyable and relaxed.
