Going Through A Divorce? Here’s What Not To Do When Dating Online During A Divorce

Woman taking off wedding 007 Going Through A Divorce? Heres What Not To Do When Dating Online During A Divorce

The internet is a great place for soon-to-be divorcees. It’s estimated by Yahoo! News that over half of all divorcees in the United States use an online dating site to connect with other people going through divorce to seek advice and to simply connect. Although finding new people online is a great way to get over the heartbreak of a failed marriage, there are some snags that can derail your happiness along the way.

While on the Dr. Phil show Scott Trout, a managing partner for the law firm of Cordell & Cordell P.C, discussed the most common mistakes people make online while going through divorce. It’s not a commonly known fact, but your ex’s divorce attorney can actually use content you’ve posted online against you in divorce cases. If you’re planning on exploring your online options before your divorce is finalized, stray away from these sticky situations:

  1. Don’t talk about new purchases.
As soon as someone buys a new car, moves into a nicer place, or even goes on vacation, it’s common for them to stick pictures of it online. Who wouldn’t want their potential dates to know how well they’re doing on their own? But according to Trout, this will come back to bite you. High priced items you post online can be used against you in claims that you can’t afford alimony or child support.
  2. Make un-tagging your best friend.
A lot of people take their online dating lives to the world of social media. Whether it’s new dates or old friends, keep yourself untagged in photos and posts. Even if your profile is set to private, having others tag you gives your ex easy access to keep tabs on you. Chances are if it’s entertaining enough to go on Facebook, it’s not something you want showing up in court.
  3. You can be sexy, but never show skin.
Until those last papers are signed, Trout claims that photos that show too much skin or showcase you participating in risque behaviors (such as drinking alcohol) can hurt you in both divorce cases and custody battles.
  4. Anything said about your kids should be positive!
If you have kids, trust our Sexperts, you’re not the only one who has daydreamed of telling them to stick a sock in it. But according to Trout, examples of parents complaining about their children online is now the most popular evidence to use in custody cases. When you’re dating online, concentrate on getting to know people, not complaining about the ones you already know.
  5.  Never talk about the judge in your case!
You may not think judges are the types of people to use online dating sites, but you’d be surprised at how many people from all walks of life look for sex online. The chance is slight, but if you get caught bad mouthing your judge, “you lose” as Trout puts it.

Online dating is a great way of relieving the stress and sadness that comes along with a divorce, but like anything in life, there are rules and guidelines you need to oblige by if you want to be successful at it.
