Men and women alike have had tricks up their sleeves to get the opposite sex in bed for years. Telling one another that sex can relieve headaches, that orgasms help you lose weight, and even that semen is good for your skin.

Well Sex Searchers, we have another thing to add to that list, except this time it’s nothing just something to say to get someone in bed– it’s a fact: Sex can relieve your holiday stress. I guess they were on to something when they said that the best things in life are free!

Professor of Kinesiology at New York City’s Pace University Dr. Sean Gennings has published his findings that having sex during a difficult time in your life can not only be therapeutic, but it can actually physically relieve stress.

“We don’t just use sex to reproduce anymore,” says Dr. Gennings. “We have the ability to use it for so much more than that. One of the newest discoveries is that we can actually physically reduce the symptoms of stress on your body.”

Besides diet, one of the biggest causes of high blood pressure is stress. By reducing your stress through sex, you’re giving yourself a chance to reduce your blood pressure. Even if it’s only for an hour a day, doctors say that lowering your blood pressure momentarily through sex can actually help it come down permanently.

It forces the body to concentrate on one region

When you’re stressed, it’s hard to get your mind off the fact that you’re stressed. Whether it’s money, work, or your social life, thinking about it is nearly impossible to avoid. When you’re having sex, it forces both your body and mind to concentrate on what you’re doing and how your body is reacting to those actions. What’s this do for your stress? Well, logic will tell you that if your mind is on sex, it’s off of stress! Dr. Gennings’s study says that 19 research subjects out of 20 are less stressed when their sex is more intense.

Your muscles are less tense

Ever wonder why people suggest you get massages while you’re stressed? Your body can physically carry your stress in your muscles, and getting a massage is a great way to loosen you up. Sex actually has that same effect! When you have sex and let your body go, the stress you were carrying in your muscles eases up, letting you feel both physically and emotionally stress free after you’re done!

If December is getting to you a little too intensely, have sex! It’ll relieve your stress in the funnest way possible.
