About Me: All this talk about love reminds me of a film I once saw, ‘the Winter Guest’ with Emma Thompson. There was a very memorable scene. It’s a very grey, bleak day in an English town. It’s the middle of winter. Two men are playing at the edge of a frozen lake. They find a litter of kittens. Just then a dense fog descends. One of the men takes the kittens and puts them in the front of his jacket. He begins walking in a direction he assumes is home, but because the fog is so thick, he is walking the wrong way. He is walking out towards the middle of the lake. The other man shouts to him that he is going the wrong way—to be careful because the ice is thin. But the man with the kittens couldn’t hear his cries; he had lost his hearing aid earlier. So the image we are left with is a vast frozen lake, covered with a dense fog—so thick that you can’t see anything beyond five feet. A lone man is cuddling a litter of kittens in his jacket. He is consoling and comforting them with his soft voice. The man is basically lost in the middle of the lake. He is in constant danger of the thin ice collapsing below his feet. He will probably only be saved if he makes it to the other side of the lake. This is an excellent example of the human condition. We are each of us lost on a frozen lake that can collapse any moment. We are blindly trying to get to the “other side”. Unfortunately, some of us can’t necessarily hear those who care for us. We only have our loved ones. Like the kittens in our example. They are our lovers whom we caress as we bravely trudge along on this barren wasteland. So, take heed. You will need your litter of kittens. Otherwise it will be a very lonely trip on that icefield.
